The origins of the Confraternity can be traced back to the Church of the Frari. In 1308, the first Scuola della Misericordia — also known as Santa Maria di Valverde — was established in the nearby abbey. By 1498, the Council of Ten had granted authorization to build the Scuola Nuova, in order to accommodate the Confraternity’s growing spatial needs.

1261
Le origini della Confraternita nella chiesa dei Frari, successivamente nel 1308 Viene fondata la prima Scuola della Misericordia, detta anche di Santa Maria di Valverde, nella vicina Abbazia, ma già nel 1498 il Consiglio dei Dieci concede l’autorizzazione per costruire la Scuola Nuova, per soddisfare le necessità di spazio della Confraternita.
1504
Vengono commissionati i primi due progetti architettonici, uno di Giovanni Fontana e l’altro di alessandro leopardi, secondo alcuni nel 1507 viene scelto quello di Alessandro Leopardi, famoso scultore dell’epoca e nel 1508 iniziano i primi lavori di consolidamento delle fondamenta.
Two initial architectural designs were commissioned — one by Giovanni Fontana and another by Alessandro Leopardi. According to some sources, in 1507 the plan by Leopardi, a renowned sculptor of the period, was selected, and in 1508 construction began with the consolidation of the foundations.
1531
Dopo un periodo di blocco dei cantieri per lo scontro Lega dei Cambrai (Sacro Romano Impero, Spagna e Francia) contro la Repubblica di Venezia, vengono esaminati quattro nuovi progetti tra i quali viene scelto quello dell’Architetto fiorentino Jacopo Sansovino e nell’anno successivo iniziano ufficialmente i nuovi lavori.
Following a halt caused by the conflict of the League of Cambrai (Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and France) against the Republic of Venice, four new design proposals were considered. Among these, the project by the Florentine architect Jacopo Sansovino was chosen, and the following year work officially resumed.

La Scuola della Misericordia è ancora priva della copertura, del pavimento del primo piano e dello scalone. Per difficoltà finanziarie viene fusa con l’adiacente e ricca Scuola di San Cristoforo dei Mercanti della Madonna dell’Orto. Lo stesso anno muore Jacopo Sansovino.
The Scuola della Misericordia was still without a roof, the first-floor paving, and the grand staircase. Due to financial difficulties it was merged with the adjacent and wealthy Scuola di San Cristoforo dei Mercanti at Madonna dell’Orto. That same year, Jacopo Sansovino died.

Viene realizzato l’arco monumentale della porta d’ingresso nella sala superiore.

Caduta della Serenissima, qualche anno dopo muore anche Lodovico Manin, ultimo doge di Venezia.

La Scuola viene soppressa dalle disposizioni napoleoniche e diventa locale ad uso militare.

1848
Nell’epopea Risorgimentale si costituisce la Repubblica Veneta democratica presieduta da Daniele Manin che ha vita breve perché, l’anno successivo, gli austriaci entrano a Venezia. La Scuola continua a rimanere edificio a uso militare.
During the Risorgimento, the democratic Venetian Republic was established under the leadership of Daniele Manin, but it was short-lived: the following year, Austrian troops entered Venice. The Scuola continued to be used for military purposes.
1899
La città di Venezia acquista a prezzo contenuto lo stabile denominato “ex chiesa della Misericordia”.
The City of Venice purchased at a modest price the building known as the “former Church of the Misericordia.”
1914
Il primo piano dell’edificio diventa la sede della società sportiva Costantino Reyer con la realizzazione di un campo da basket e tribune in legno in grado di ospitare fino a 1000 persone.
The building’s first floor became the headquarters of the sports club Costantino Reyer, with the construction of a basketball court and wooden stands capable of accommodating up to 1,000 spectators.
Thanks to the project financing agreement between the Municipality of Venice and SMV, La Misericordia has once again become a dynamic system of great technological value for the city, reinterpreting its ancient role of hospitality in a contemporary way.
